Siding Repair a Cost-Effective Solution to Replacement

Have you ever found the siding on your home in disrepair? If so, don’t feel bad, as this is not unusual on today’s homes. With many homes now using aluminum, wood or vinyl siding, damage from weather or animals to these materials necessitate the need for a repair. This damage is visually unappealing and may allow more costly water damage to occur.

While siding damage is quite common, it is usually isolated to a small section of your home’s exterior. An errant rock from a lawnmower, pesky neighborhood animals, or a severe weather event will rarely destroy all the siding. Hence, a targeted siding repair is more appropriate than replacing all the siding.

When considering a siding repair, homeowners often assume (or are led to believe) that all of their siding must be redone. Replacing all of the siding does have a few benefits for you but it can be immensely expensive and unnecessary when viable alternatives exist. Many times siding companies are more adept at complete siding replacement and therefore won’t offer the option for repair.

Instead of paying for the installation of all new siding, you could elect to repair the siding in just the damaged areas. This approach can drastically reduce your cost and is actually quite simple when a repair professional holds the right tools, knowledge and techniques.

Avoid Costly Siding Replacement

I received a call from a homeowner recently in which a piece of his soffit (simply a piece that connects the wall to the roof… sometimes called “eves”) departed the front of his home during a recent wind storm. All that was left was the piece of wood to which the soffit was originally nailed. Consequently, exposed wood was not only an eyesore for this client, but also a serious candidate for wood rot.

In his situation, complete siding replacement was unnecessary, when he simply needed one piece of siding. In these situations, siding contractors take advantage of homeowners who think that all the siding or soffits must be replaced in order to get a perfect match. This isn’t always the case!

Unfortunately, however, siding varies in size, color, shape and texture. And custom-made siding components aren’t available at the local supply or hardware stores, so I ultimately had to make a custom piece at our shop.

Siding Repair Saves Money

So as you can see, this was a quick project that saved the homeowner from living with an eyesore on the front of his home. Whether your siding damage is large or small or large, consider a custom repair instead of total replacement-the money you save could pay for a vacation!
